What We Do
Systems for Action (S4A) is a signature research program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation that builds a Culture of Health by rigorously testing new ways of connecting the nation’s fragmented medical, social, and public health systems. Scientific research often focuses narrowly on a single type of service, professional area of practice, or group of service providers–usually those within the medical care and public health sectors. While such studies allow researchers to isolate the implementation and impact of specific interventions, the research often falls short in revealing how multiple systems converge and interact–or fail to do so–in supporting population health. To address these evidence gaps, the S4A program supports new research on novel ways of aligning delivery and financing systems across these three sectors.
S4A uses a wide research lens that includes and extends beyond medical care and public health to include other social service systems that affect health and well-being, such as housing, transportation, education, employment, food and nutrition assistance, child and family support, criminal and juvenile justice, and economic and community development.
What We Fund
The 2020 Systems for Action Supplemental COVID-19 Studies Call for Proposals (CFP) will open Wednesday, July 1, 2020 and close Wednesday, August 5, 2020, 3pm ET.
The CFP will provide supplemental research funding to teams that are already engaged in the study of a promising system alignment mechanism, with the objective of learning how this mechanism performs in addressing health and social needs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Studies funded will produce new scientific knowledge about the implementation and impact of existing, innovative strategies to align multiple financing and delivery systems supporting a Culture of Health. Studies must address one or more of the research priorities listed in the S4A Research Agenda and focus on one more novel mechanisms for multi-sector alignment, integration, and improvement.

Funding From our Partners
Evidence for Action is an investigator-initiated research program designed to support high-impact action-oriented research. We are interested in funding innovative approaches that will shed light on conditions that foster a Culture of Health. In the initial phase of funding, we are seeking proposals that guide action, open up new areas for inquiry, and facilitate future research. We are especially interested in research that will help develop the data and evidence necessary to improve health and equity in communities across the country.
Policies for Action (P4A) is a research program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) administered through the National Coordinating Center at the Urban Institute and in collaboration with five research hubs at Temple University, New York University, the University of Illinois at Chicago together with Washington University at St. Louis, the University of Michigan, and the Urban Institute. Founded in 2015, the program funds research identifying policies, laws, and other regulatory tools in the public and private sectors that can support RWJF’s mission to build a Culture of Health.
