What We Do
Systems for Action (S4A) is a signature research program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation that builds a Culture of Health by rigorously testing new ways of connecting the nation’s fragmented medical, social, and public health systems. Scientific research often focuses narrowly on a single type of service, professional area of practice, or group of service providers–usually those within the medical care and public health sectors. While such studies allow researchers to isolate the implementation and impact of specific interventions, the research often falls short in revealing how multiple systems converge and interact–or fail to do so–in supporting population health. To address these evidence gaps, the S4A program supports new research on novel ways of aligning delivery and financing systems across these three sectors.
S4A uses a wide research lens that includes and extends beyond medical care and public health to include other social service systems that affect health and well-being, such as housing, transportation, education, employment, food and nutrition assistance, child and family support, criminal and juvenile justice, and economic and community development.
What We Fund
Studies funded through the 2019 Systems for Action: System and Services Research to Build a Culture of Health Call for Proposals will test innovative mechanisms for aligning delivery and financing systems for medical, social, and public health services, with a focus on the effects of these mechanisms on health and health equity that support a Culture of Health. Studies must address one or more of the research priorities listed in the S4A Research Agenda and test mechanisms for aligning systems that involve all three sectors: medical, social, and public health services.

Virtual Workshop: Developing a Successful Application for the Systems for Action Research Program
This virtual workshop highlights research teams that have successfully developed proposals for Systems for Action program and have received funding. They will share their strategies for developing their proposals and will provide advice for developing the strongest proposal possible.
Funding From our Partners
Evidence for Action is an investigator-initiated research program designed to support high-impact action-oriented research. We are interested in funding innovative approaches that will shed light on conditions that foster a Culture of Health. In the initial phase of funding, we are seeking proposals that guide action, open up new areas for inquiry, and facilitate future research. We are especially interested in research that will help develop the data and evidence necessary to improve health and equity in communities across the country.
Policies for Action (P4A) is a research program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) administered through the National Coordinating Center at the Urban Institute and in collaboration with five research hubs at Temple University, New York University, the University of Illinois at Chicago together with Washington University at St. Louis, the University of Michigan, and the Urban Institute. Founded in 2015, the program funds research identifying policies, laws, and other regulatory tools in the public and private sectors that can support RWJF’s mission to build a Culture of Health.
