Developmental screening for every young child is recommended to detect and prevent developmental delays and behavioral problems by linking children and families to early treatment interventions. To identify more families with service needs and ultimately reduce health disparities, 2-1-1 technology is used to identify and connect families with very young children to community-based child development services. The collaborative model expands access to early screening and evidence based treatment for developmental and behavioral problems, and coordinates care between medical and community-based providers. A recommended approach to enhance screening for developmental delays in young children will be presented, based on a randomized control trial comparing routine pediatric medical care to a collaboration between a pediatric clinic and an established community-based child development program. The trial examines whether the collaborative approach with easy access through 2-1-1 services is associated with more screening and treatment for developmental delays in children up to three years old from Latino low-income families in Los Angeles.
